Flight Information for Conferees

Chambersburg does not have a local airport. However, several major international airports are within an easy 2-4 hour drive.

Harrisburg International Airport (HIA) is closest, but is typically more expensive and with fewer flights. Baltimore-Washington International Airport (BWI) is typically the least expensive destination for domestic flights, while Washington Dulles International (IAD) has the greatest number of international flights. Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) is slightly farther, but has many flights (both international and domestic). Driving time from BWI or IAD to Wilson College is slightly less than two hours; for HRB, the time is a little more than one hour; for PHL, it is about three hours.

If you are planning to attend one of the Sunday short course, please try to arrive on Saturday, August 2nd before 3 p.m., Eastern Daylight Time (EDT = GMT - 5). If you are not attending a short course, then plan to arrive at your destination airport on Sunday August 3rd before 3 p.m., EDT.

Carpooling from the Airports

Because Chambersburg is not easily accessible using public transportation, the Conference has always tried to help coordinate carpooling from the airports, particularly for international guests and students. The IDRC 2008 Travel Coordinator, David Semmes (email), will attempt to match drivers and riders.

If you can provide transportation for other conferees, please complete the online ride donor form (click here). We will certainly honor any special circumstances or limitations in your availability.

Similarly, if you need transportation from an airport to Chambersburg, please complete the online ride request form (click here). If you have not already purchased your airline ticket, David can tell you when and where carpools may already be available.

If your trip requires you to spend the night in Baltimore, there are many convenient hotels. Click http://www.internationalairportguide.com/hotels/bwi_airport_hotels.html to find a complete listing.

International Travel Permission (Visas)

For those conferees coming from outside the United States, a visa may or may not be required. Most of the European countries, along with Australia, Japan and New Zealand, are on a waiver list. For exact details, please refer to the U.S. State Department's web page on this subject at the following link: http://travel.state.gov/visa/temp/types/types_1262.html .
